Starting Again in 2018

Updated: Sep 28, 2018

Everybody loves a good old new year’s resolution, you know the sort of habits you tell yourself you’re going to break but find yourself falling head first back into after a couple of weeks into the year. Yeah, you know what I mean. But nevertheless, we all love trying to reset our lives every new year. But here’s the thing, you can’t possibly succeed with this ‘reset’ if one, you don’t believe you’re going to have some sort of growth and renewal at the end and two if your plan is to start this reset within your own strength. Habits don’t happen overnight, for an example my plan for this year is to get more sleep and become a morning person. Now, it’s the 2nd of January and I guess I’m doing okay on the ‘getting more sleep’, but becoming a morning person isn’t as easy as I thought. This morning when my alarm went off I got up, turned it off and went back to bed, and that was the end of that. However, I know if I want to become a morning person I must have some sort of reason behind it in order to motivate me to want to wake up early. So after I finish this post I plan on making a list of reasons why I need to wake up early, reasons I know will definitely motivate me to wake up earlier. To start afresh, and have a successful new year’s resolution you need to understand why you’re doing it in the first place and not just doing it for ‘doing it’ sake. I know a good amount of people who tell themselves that they’re going to start exercising more, they’re going to start sleeping earlier, but have no sort of motivation to push them to carry on with this endeavour.

Let’s be realistic here, new year’s resolutions are good and all, but like I said before habits don’t happen overnight, habits are formed over an amount of time. If I say, I’m going to drink more water, eight cups of water a day in fact but had no form of the motivation behind it, I don’t think I’d even be able to drink six let alone four in a day. Now if I decided to sit down and make a list of why I want to drink more water and pinned it somewhere I know I’ll always see it, then just maybe I’d not just be reminded to drink more water but also, I’d be motivated to drink more water due to the various reasons I came up with. And if let’s say I decided to purchase a 2-litre water bottle and carried it around with me everywhere I went, I’d most definitely be reminded to drink more water.

The healthy habits you decide to form for yourself must be realistic, something you know you want to do, and something you know will trigger some sort of growth in you, whether it’s mindset, spirituality, mentality or even physicality. Ladies and Gentlemen, everyone loves a good new year’s resolution but in order for you to succeed in your goal for the year you must first do something you know you want to do, not something others are doing so you think well, I’ll try that out too. Give yourself a goal you truly want to achieve and secondly, after identifying this goal give yourself some sort of motivation to persuade you to become persistent in accomplishing your goal so, at the end of this year, you can look back and say, ‘Yeah, I did that!’
